What We're About
Helping Hand Ministry, an outreach of First Church, combines ministry and mission by offering short-term assistance to needy Tulsans. Started as a First Presbyterian Church outreach under the supervision of the Deacons over 30 years ago, the Helping Hand Ministry has evolved into a not for profit corporation. Five mornings a week, from nine to noon, compassionate volunteers from First Church help disadvantaged individuals and families over a temporary crisis by assisting in the payment of their utility bills, rents, prescriptions and with the distribution of food from the pantry.
In 2011 alone the Helping Hand Ministry spent over $292,000 to: keep 360 families from being evicted; provide prescriptions for 60 people; help 2,487 families keep from losing their utility services (including water, electrical service, natural gas and propane); and provide over 1,632 family members with food for approximately 14,688 meals.
As an outreach to the Tulsa community, First Presbyterian Church provides the overhead costs for Helping Hand Ministry: space in the Bernsen Community Life Center, utilities (electricity, water, and heating) & bookkeeping assistance.
Helping Hand has no paid staff or operating expenses — every dollar donated is disbursed in aid of the ministry’s clients.
