Cancer Support Ministry

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. -Matthew 11:28 (NRSV)

Volunteerscsm

In the past five years more than 25 members of First Church, and their families, have faced cancer.

Whenever cancer strikes, it affects the whole family, not just the patient. Along varied paths of care, through informational events, and with materials and support resources within the life of FPC, the Cancer Support Ministry’s aim is to offer Christian support to those whose burdens are heavy and whose struggles are wearisome due to cancer.

How Can I Help?
If you or someone in your family has suffered from cancer,  if you have watched a friend or co-worker face this disease, you probably asked yourself, “What can I do to help?”

We have a suggestion for you. The volunteers of the Cancer Support Ministry at FPC have stepped forward to help these families.  We invite you to join us!

In interviews with cancer patients, and their families, they have told us that they need information, spiritual support, and practical help. These needs come at a time when they are often fearful and overwhelmed, at a time when they have not been able to meet these needs by themselves.

Here’s How You Can Help!
Although each family’s situation is different, here are some of the ways you might be able to help:

Spiritual Support
A number of existing groups within FPC reach out to help patients and families. You might consider joining one of these groups.
Intercessory Prayer: Members of the Guild of Intercessors pray daily for those in need of healing and help.
Stephen Ministers: These lay ministers serve as Christian friends and walk with members through their difficulties. They help patients and their families during treatments.
Hospital Visits: Volunteer Chaplains visits members who are in hospital.
Calls: Telecare Callers connect with patients after hospital stays.

Information & Training
FPC is building a library of resources and information for patients and families. Some materials are in the Kirkland Resource Centers and others are available in the Pastoral Care Office. Audio copies of sermons and spiritual music are also available for patients.s

Please consider how you can help these patients! To sign up to volunteer, contact Sara Studenmund at 918-301-1039, sstudenmund@firstchurchtulsa.org or Rev. Rick Davis, 301-1040, rdavis@firstchurchtulsa.org
