Deacons
The office of deacon, as set forth in Scripture, is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.
"It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and assisting with the Lord's Supper."
The Deacons are organized as the Board of Deacons and are led by the Moderator (Doug Smith). There are 30 Deacons on the board; they are nominated and serve for a three-year term of service. Each year 10 new deacons are nominated and commissioned, and 10 deacons leave the board.
At First Church, the Board of Deacons undertake a number of duties and responsibilities:
- Choir breakfast at Easter
- Day of Care – Deacons offer help with home repairs to shut-ins and seniors
- Bluegrass and BBQ - The Deacons sponsor an afternoon of great food and music at Camp Loughridge for First Church members and their guests.
- Camp Sunshine – The Deacons sponsor a day of food, fun and games at Camp Loughridge for children with cancer and their families.
- Thanksgiving Dinner – The Deacons serve Thanksgiving Dinner for members who are alone at Thanksgiving
- Project Merry Christmas – The Deacons provide Christmas baskets for needy families
- Home Communion – Elders and Deacons bring Home Communion to ill and homebound members Sunday afternoons on each Communion Sunday.
- Flower Deliveries on Sundays – The Deacons deliver flowers each Sunday to members in hospitals and nursing homes.
- Lily Deliveries (at Easter) and Poinsettia deliveries (at Christmas)
- Visitation – The Deacons call on homebound members throughout the year.
