Parables: Windows Onto the Landscape of God’s Kingdom

June 30th – July 7th at Ghost Ranch

John writes “No one has seen God at any time. It is God the only begotten son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.” (John 1:18). Jesus himself was a window onto the activity of God in our world and in our lives, and his primary mode of teaching was through the use of parables, either in mini-stories, word images, or actions he would perform.
Through these indirect forms of teaching, Jesus helps the listener grasp the new in terms of the familiar, the unknown in terms of the knowable, and the activity of God in glimpse-able snapshots from everyday life. Literally, his parables are like windows through which we can gaze upon the continuing activity of God in the world and in our lives.
Together we will engage some of Jesus parables (The Hidden Treasure, The Friend At Midnight, The Compassionate Traveler, The Father With Two Sons), as well as look at the images Jesus offers us in word images (“I Am The Door”) and actions (The Feeding Of The 5000) in John’s Gospel. Through encounters with the scriptures, film clips, small group conversations, drama, and engaging exercises we will allow the words and life of Jesus to encounter us and give us glimpses onto the landscape of God’s Kingdom.
